The blobfish

The reason the blobfish is a living is because:

  • it can respond

  • it can reproduce

  • it can grow

  • and they are made of one or more cells

blobfish needs
Air
Shelter
Water
Food
It gets air through its gills
It uses corals and rocks as shelter
It filters water so it could be drinkable
They eat any deep sea invertebrates, Mollusks and sea urchins that float close enough in front of it so it can chomp

The blobfish or blob sculpin looks like a blob because it has no muscles, they are made of a gelatinous mass and are less dense than water which give it its white complection. It lives at the the bottom of the Tasman sea area (1000 to 2000 feet), which makes it extremely rare and only a few have seen land. That is why there is not much pictures of them on the internet. The blobfish reproduce by laying thousands of eggs on the deep sea floor under a rock or something to protect the babies when they are born. The blobfish females actually nest beside their eggs and other females.

Blobfish can survive at extreme pressure levels that would normally explode the bones of a normal creature because they barely have oxygen in their body. Blobfish are approaching extinction because of deep sea fishing and because the Tasman sea is their only home. The blobfish's average maximum size is 65 cm long. The blobfish's cant get a part of their body dried out or else it will die.

Blobfish eat deep sea invertebrates, mollusks and sea urchins that just float in front of them close enough for them to bite. Blobfish are members of the Psychrodultidae family which includes other fatheads or fathead sculpins like the polar sculpin.

5 Cool facts!!!

1. In September 2013 the blobfish was voted the worlds
ugliest animal because of its human like face!
2. No animals eat blobfish because they are inedible due to their lack of muscle.
3. Blobfish help the environment by eating crabs and mollusks so they don't overpopulate.
4. We can help the blobfish by stopping deep sea trawling so they can continue their role of balancing the environment.
5. Blobfishes don't have a bladder.

The Blobfish are a member of the Kingdom Animalia which means that they are animals. Blobfish are in the Phylum Chordata because they have a spinal chord that sends messages through its entire body. The Blobfish are in the Class Actinopterygii because they are ray-finned fishes which means that they have bony like spikes that are connected with skin. Blobfish are in the order Scorpaeniforms which means they are an diverse order of ray-finned but what distinguishes them from other is that they are carnivorous so they eat crustaceans or smaller fish. It is in the suborder Cottedei so it is a sculpin or a fish that dwells on the bottom of water bodies. They are in the family Psychrolutidae which consist of fathead sclupins shaped like tadpoles with large heads that taper back into small flat tails. Blobfish are in the genus psychrolutes that contains fatheads without muscles. And its species are called P.marcidus.
